Planning transportation to and from appointments is an important part of staying organized and making the most of the services, care, and supports you receive through the California Department of Developmental Services (“DDS”). However, reliable transportation may not always be easy to find. This can be especially true for folks who live far away from their regional care center or other important care facilities. It can also be a challenge for those whose developmental disability prevents them from driving themselves. Regardless, transportation planning for appointments is an important consideration for anyone receiving DDS care and supports.
How DDS Can Help With Transportation
For starters, it’s important to be aware of the transportation services and resources DDS offers. Transportation services are included in the agency’s broad array of supports. If you are receiving services through a regional care center, you are likely eligible for transportation assistance through one of the following:
- public transit
- specialized transportation companies
- day programs and residential vendors with transportation services
- family members, friends, and at-home caregivers who can drive you
For each of these, DDS can provide information and, in many cases, some form of funding to improve access. Be sure to talk about your transportation needs with your regional center service coordinator. They can help incorporate transportation planning and services into your Individual Program Plan (“IPP”).
Tips for Effective Transportation Planning
When scheduling appointments, always note the date, time, and location. Keep a written or digital calendar so you can track of upcoming rides and appointments. If a family member or caregiver is helping, make sure they have copies of your schedule and transportation provider’s contact information.
Once you make an appointment, let your care coordinator know. If DDS is providing transportation services, make sure you work with your care coordinator to schedule your transportation to and from the appointment.
Before the day of your appointment, look up where the appointment is and how long it will take to get there, given your mode of transportation. As a general rule, always give yourself extra travel time. This minimizes the chance of being late. Finally, if you need to change or cancel a ride, notify your transportation provider as early as possible.
By planning ahead and using DDS-supported transportation resources, participants can maintain independence and consistently access the care they need.
