Community Inclusion: Sports, Arts, and Recreation

One of the top priorities for the California Department of Developmental Services ("DDS") is providing care that empowers developmentally disabled individuals to remain actively engaged with their families and communities. This is why the DDS strives to deliver community and home based care as much as possible. To further promote family and community engagement, DDS promotes programming focused on community inclusion. Sports, art, and recreation are among some of the most common types of inclusive programming DDS promotes.

How Does DDS Promote Community Inclusion Through Sports, Arts, and Recreation?

Through DDS-funded services, individuals can access programs that match their interests and abilities. In sports, this most often includes adaptive fitness classes. These may take place at home or in community-based facilities.

Additionally, most communities have a number of sports programs that cater specifically to individuals with developmental disabilities. Your DDS regional care center can help pair you with inclusive sports teams, leagues, or activities.

In the arts, community inclusion programs may include activities like painting, music, dance, and theater. Many regional centers partner with local art studios, museums, and community colleges to provide accessible classes and other activities.

Finally, social and recreational activities are also an important part of inclusion. DDS can help individuals find recreational programs suitable for those with developmental disabilities.

DDS Funding for Inclusive Activities

To further promote inclusive activities, the DDS awards Social Rec Grants to fund inclusive community programs. More specifically, Social Rec Grants fund inclusive community events that are social and recreational in nature.
