The California Department of Developmental Services (“DDS”) provides vital care, resources, and support for Californians with developmental disabilities. However, the process of applying for DDS services can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming. Fortunately, the process is not as difficult as it may at first appear. Because accessing the care and resources you and your loved ones need is vital, it’s important to understand how to navigate the application process. How to Access California DDS Services
To apply for DDS services, complete the following checklist:
- Confirm Eligibility. Under the Lanterman Act, Californians with developmental disabilities have a right to receive personalized care through California DDS. Importantly, care is available to everyone regardless of income. To be eligible for DDS services, an individual must (1) have a developmental disability, (2) that began before the person turned 18, (3) that is expected to continue indefinitely, and (4) that creates a significant disability in the person’s life. If you or your love done meets these four requirements, you are likely eligible for DDS services.
- Locate Your DDS Regional Center. DDS services, including initial eligibility determinations, are all administered through DDS’s network of local regional centers. Use our locator tool or visit California DDS’s website to find the regional center closest to you. This regional center will be your primary hub for all things related to DDS.
- Schedule Intake and Assessment. As soon as you’ve located your regional center, reach out to them and request an intake and assessment appointment. This is where you will speak to a DDS representative and begin the process of determining eligibility.
- Gather Supporting Documentation. Prior to your intake and assessment appointment, gather all relevant medical documentation that proves you or your loved one have a significant disability. In addition to medical records, you may also want to find educational records and anything else related to teh underlying disability.
- Complete DDS Intake and Assessment. On your scheduled day, attend your intake and assessment. Gathering all supporting documentation prior to this meeting will ensure you’re prepared and will enable DDS to make an eligibility determination as quick as possible.
- Review DDS’s Decision. There’s nothing else to do at this point. From here, you are simply waiting to hear back from the DDS. If you don’t hear from your regional center for several weeks, it’s always a good idea to reach out and follow up.
